Camping in a tent...down by the River!

Last Saturday we headed up to a friend from work's property along the Indian River in Missouri. The Scotts came with us as we headed off on a quickly thrown together adventure. This was our conversation Friday night as I was dropping the kids off at their house to play on the water slide.

Me: "What are you all doing this weekend?"

Keisha: "Well, we had thought about going camping."

Me: "Really! Curt wanted to go camping too but there weren't any campsites open at Devil's Den. We thought about going to my friend's property in Missouri, but hadn't decided. You want to go?"

Keisha: "That'd be so much fun. We can leave after the kids nap time and we'll get all the food together in the morning..."

And so it went. We kinda fly by the seat of our pants, but it is worth it. We threw all our stuff (including a tent we've had for 6 months but never used) and headed off on our adventure.

The kids had so much fun floating in the river, throwing rocks in the river and jumping off an area upstream a little way that had a concrete area and swimming hole to play in.

Snack Time!!

Hanging at our campsite. My friend Mary has a beautiful piece of property on the river. Her house in up near the road, the her backyard is down in a valley by the river. There were lots of trees for shade, tree swings and benches to sit on. It was the perfect place to go and get away and relax!

Sunday morning we decided to be really adventurous and take the kids canoing. It's been a LONG time since either Curt or I have canoed, but how hard could it be? The river was low, so it couldn't be that much of a challenge, right? WRONG!! It started out great, although we were a little back heavy and dragged over the rock bottom on a regular basis. Then we got to a part of the river that had faster water and a sharp turn...we didn't navigate it so well. We got stuck on a rock ledge, then started going backwards, then quickly took on water from the back requiring an emergency evacuation of the kids. Curt threw the kids up on the rock ledge while I thought I was being heroic and trying (unsuccessfully) to hold the canoe from floating away. I ended up straddling the canoe and getting my left leg bruised as the canoe floated away. Curt then jump on the canoe as it was floating away so we didn't get stranded with no canoe, in the process banging up his right leg on the rocks. The kids were yelling "Daddy's going to get lost!" as Curt 's heading down the river trying to get the canoe back to where we could get in it. Needless to say, it was quite the adventure and the kids have NO desire to go canoing again any time soon. Oh yeah, shortly after the tipping incident, we had to stop in the middle of the river to let a half dozen cows pass through. Nothing like canoing in the country!!!

I love the cow part...
The kids had told me about the cows in the river, but of course I didn't believe them!
That's like Keira telling me she swallowed a button (oh wait, that was true too!)

Your post was awesome and super funny but the Keira swallowing a button comment kinda overshadowedd it all. Did she really?!?!? YIKES!

Looks like you guys had a blast. It's fun that the kids are BOTh at good ages to do fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants trips and stuff. For so long a carseat and naps stood in our way of doing things and this summer we haev really enjoyed some bigger more exhausting outings.

love the pics~ but where are the parentals???There's one photo of Curt looking all fearless and cool but what about you???

Yes, it's true, she really did swallow a button. Actually, it was 2 buttons. I have a little container on our bathroom counter that holds my jewelry and random items (like buttons). It's close enough that the kids can reach over a half wall by the bathtub and grab it if they wanted to. Well, the kids had never messed with it before, but one night the kids were taking bath and Cade started yelling that Keira had swallowed a button. Don't know what possessed her to do it, but she did...one big red one and a small blue one according to Cade. At least it wasn't an earring or ring or something we would have to starting checking in the toilet for!!!
