The making of a snow fort

Since we woke up to a total of approx 6 inches of snow we were obligated to spend the morning making a snow fort. It really couldn't be avoided! Curt and I shoveled the driveway and made a HUGE pile of snow for the kids to play in. Honestly, I haven't seen this much snow since I lived in Michigan. Here's how our morning went:

First Cade had to lounge on the pile, making a plan of attack.

Next he traveled far and wide to bring the snow to his fort.

Keira's job was working on siding...

and Vice President of Cuteness!

Some neighbors came over to help with the major construction work

but the boys with their guns did most of the hard labor!

The finished project, complete with roof and support beams. I'm not sure Arkansas has ever seen such an amazing snow fort! Feel free to come play with us anytime!!!

Our attempt at sledding

The weather was perfect for sledding, so we headed to a hill nearby to try our hand at sledding. Unfortunately, the snow wasn't as perfect for sledding as we thought. The kids would hop on their sled and go about 5 feet before they stopped. We still managed to have a Grubb good time.

Ready to go!

Getting a helping hand from Dad

Caden heading down the hill

You can see that it is still snowing quite a bit!

Proof I actually got out in the snow...you all know how I feel about snow and the cold!

How snow can you go??

Just for comparison, here's the pic from this morning again.

And here it is at 4:00. And it's still snowing!!!!

I thought we moved to the south, never to return to the north (and it's associated cold snowy weather) except for vacation. I think the weather must be confused!

Happy birthday to me!!

This is starting out to be the best birthday ever! I didn't have classes in LR on Thursday, and due to some events happening at our house, I decided it would be best for me to come home on Wednesday. The weather had forecasted a huge storm to hit Arkansas Thursday night and Friday, but I thought I would either make it back in time for school (and a big test) on Friday, or school would be cancelled. Lucky for me, the storm was big enough to cancel school and I got to stay home!! Not that I would have been able to make it to LR anyway because the bad weather hit here before LR and the roads are terrible!!!

So birthday wish #1 - No school and more time at home with the family!!

Birthday wish #2 I didn't even have to wish for. My kids are just extra special and brought me a wonderful birthday surprise - breakfast in bed!! They got up before me and made me breakfast all by themselves. I woke up to them singing "happy birthday" and holding a breakfast tray. They are the BEST!!! I was a little worried the kitchen would be a wreck, but they didn't make a mess at all. They even put the waffles and syrup up after using them. Did I mention my kids are amazing!!!

Here is Caden with my beautiful breakfast in bed.

The scene out my back door. The picture doesn't even do it justice because the snow is still falling - ALOT! I anticipate at least a few more inches before it stops.

Update

It's official, Keira has strep throat. So far Curt and I are looking okay, so I'm not sure why she is the only one that got it, but she gets to spend an extra day home with Daddy today!!

Sick of the sickies

I think I probably deserve the sickies however. Let me rewind a few weeks to show you what I mean.

A few weeks ago I was working at Walgreen's, handing out H1N1 shots like they were going out of style. The wonderful company I work for is giving them for free to employees, so another tech asked me if I had got my H1N1 shot at school. "Naw, I never get sick. I was going to get it, but it just wasn't convenient and now I don't see the point." She looked at me like I was just slightly crazy, but we went on with our day.

Last Monday, thanks to MLK Jr, Caden and I had the day off school. Ethan had been sick with a cough and runny nose over the weekend, but it was worse Sunday night, so Lonnie stayed home to take care of E and take him to the doctor. I had just gotten home from taking Keira to school, sat down to take on Cade in a rousing game of Wii Mario Kart, when I get a call from Lonnie asking if I can chauffer him and Ethan to the Drs office since he has no key to his car. And by the way, he says, I need you to come NOW cause the appt is in 5 minutes. No prob I say, thinking to myself it's a good thing I actually put on real clothes and brushed my hair before taking Keira to school, not sweats and a pony like usual. We stay for the appointment, since I'm friends with the doc and his nurses from working at the hospital. Ethan is miserable and wants nothing to do with the ANP who needs to look in his ear, so Lonnie and I get to wrangle Ethan into submission. I felt so bad for the poor kid. Along the way, I got coughed on - ALOT - by Ethan. Lonnie takes him and says, "why don't I let him cough on me instead of you." "It's no big deal" I reply "I NEVER get sick." Do you catch on to my theme...I was just begging for trouble.

Low and behold, Tuesday I wake up with a sore scratchy through and sinus pressure. Figures! To top it all off, Curt and the kids came to LR this weekend, instead of me driving to NWA since I have 2 tests next week. And Keira starts complaining of a sore throat on Saturday...and Curt has a sore throat Sunday. To quote Caden "I'm the only one who's not sick 'cause I NEVER GET SICK, right Mom?" Whoa buddy, be careful what you say...you just might wake up with a sore throat on Monday!!

Let's just say it wasn't the best weekend we've ever had, although we did manage to do a few fun things in between torrential downpours. In spite of our minor ailments, we are still so blessed to have our weekends together.

Big things that have happened this week:
-Caden got his report card: 94 in literacy, 99 in math, and 100 in social studies. He still LOVES school and was beyond excited that they got to make "geometric solids" out of tooth picks and marshmallow at school last week. I don't know any better, so I think he's normal, but Margaret tells me it's pretty amazing that he comes home and verbalizes what he does at school so well. It's great to have an awesome teacher in the family to help out!!!
-Caden lost his other front tooth at school on Tuesday, so he is now officially front tooth-less. My baby is growing up!! Curt sent me this pic after he picked him up from school.

-Keira's 4T pants are too short. I'm not sure what to do with that girl! She's a skinny miny and can still fit into 2T size things at the waist, but her long legs have me buying her new pants every 6 months it seems! Oh well, she's just going to have to endure high water pants for another month or two until capri season is in full effect.
-Keira had her kindergarten eval at school last week, so we'll find out soon if her teacher feels she's ready for kindergarten. This poses a dilemma for us, so keep us and Keira in your prayers. She is too young, by 8 days, for public school kindergarten, but may be able to progress at her private school. We just worry about her since she'll be the absolute youngest kid in her class. Being a parent is HARD!
-Keira called the escalator at the library an "eskimo" all day without realizing what she was saying. It was too cute to correct her. Does that make me a bad parent?
-Caden learned about "compostrophies" at school. He meant apostrophies, again, very cute. He's also been very big into telling me I'm the best mom in the world and he jsut loves me SO MUCH! I am soaking it in and loving every minute because I know the day may come in the near future where he doesn't want to share his love with me so easily.

I guess that's it in a nutshell. I'll try to be better about blogging. Miss you all!

Christmas Part 2

This is Curt taking over the blog...dum, dum, duuuuummmmm!!!!!

There are many pictures on this post. Rachel did not put them all on since I apparently took about 250. We had a great Christmas in Indiana, it was nice seeing the family. We spent Christmas Eve at Grandma Reed's where Santa Claus made an appearance, a huge hit with Caden and Keira! It has been a long time since I have seen some of my cousins and I cannot believe how much everyone has changed. We had lunch at Grandma Reed's on Christmas day and made the trip to Grandma Grubb's that evening. Christmas night we opened presents at Pops and Grandmas Bets and had a blast watching the kids open their presents. We left Sunday morning...just in time for a whiteout snow storm from Terre Haute to Saint Louis. I can't wait for the next chance to make it up north again. I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year!!

Christmas Part 1

I know this is a little late...but better late than never, right?!

Curt and the kids went to Indiana for Christmas (I had to work at the hospital, the trip was a last minute spontaneous thing) so our family celebrated Christmas on the 22nd with the Lamps. Favorite gifts this year were new big kid Bibles for the kids, lots of Bakugans for Caden, arts and crafts galore for Keira, and a Wii for the family!!! Here are the highlights:

Looking at all the good loot in the stockings

Too cute to resist

The kids got Curt a hog for his hitch

Caden reading his new Bible. Both kids think it is soooo awesome it has maps in it. It's the little things that excite the kids!! Ha!!

Thanks for the book Aunt Debbie and Uncle Larry
